What Is Integrative Medicine?
Integrative medicine and health reaffirm the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeuticapproaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.
Integrative medicine combines modern medicine with established approaches from around the world. By joining modern medicine with proven practices from other healing traditions, integrative practitioners are better able to relieve suffering, reduce stress, maintain the well-being, and enhance the resilience of their patients.

Alina Olteanu, M.D., PhD
Do you ever wish you had a pediatrician with a strong allopathic and research background who:
If you do, Dr Alina Olteanu is here to provide you a trustworthy perspective on pediatric health that it’s rare to find anywhere else.
Dr. Alina Olteanu is the founder and president of “Whole Child Pediatrics of North Texas”. She is the only pediatrician in the DFW area trained through the prestigious Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, founded by Dr Andrew Weil. She is board-certified in pediatrics but also in integrative medicine through the American Board of Physician Specialties and the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. She holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill. She did her pediatric residency at Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston, Texas and received her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
She has extensive knowledge about herbs, supplements, homeopathy, aromatherapy, functional medicine, energy medicine, mind-body medicine, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine, which she practices in combination with traditional, allopathic medicine.
Dr Alina recognizes that the current medical system is imperfect and it often fails patients by its focus on disease management, rather than health promotion and disease prevention. She knows that the epidemic of childhood chronic diseases is preventable and even reversible, mainly through a better diet, a more balanced lifestyle, and reducing stress and harmful environmental exposures. At the same time, she respects the amazing advances of traditional medicine, including vaccines, and she recommends antibiotics and other pharmaceutical treatments when necessary.
She practices what many people call integrative medicine, but she prefers to call it just being a good, caring doctor. As an innovator in the health care revolution, she is passionate about transforming the current medical system that over-diagnosis and over-medicates children, into a model of care that integrates the belief in the innate healing capacities of the body and nature.
Dr Alina speaks several languages (Romanian, Spanish, German) and has a special interest in nutrition, childhood behavioral problems, autism, ADHD, allergies, eczema, asthma, and epigenetics.
Her past accomplishments include, but are not limited to:
Fellowship in Integrative Psychiatry at the Integrative Psychiatry Institute
Fellowship in Integrative Psychiatry
Colic can be one of the major stresses in child rearing. The colicky infant usually cries for at least several hours a day, more often in the late afternoon and early evening hours. It begins in the first few weeks of life, peaks in the fourth to sixth week, and then typically resolves by the third or fourth month of life. Your child may display sudden and intense crying which is accompanied by stiffening, drawing up of the legs, and passing of gas.
Breast milk is good for your baby. It is superior to any alternative form of infant formula and is uniquely designed to meet the nutritional needs of your infant. It contains antibodies which will help protect your baby against illness. Breastfeeding is easy, inexpensive, and convenient; there are no bottles to wash and no formula to prepare. Breast milk is easy to digest, and less allergenic, thus there are fewer problems with constipation and diarrhea. Breastfeeding provides a special bonding for baby and mother. It also helps mom get back into shape by contracting the uterus.
All babies are different. Here is a summary of some of the physical characteristics and newborn behavior that your baby may have. Each of them are normal findings. Take a minute to examine your baby, looking for some of these characteristics.
Newborns sleep a lot during the first month of life. Your child may sleep anywhere from 12 to 20 hours per day with an average of 16 hours per day. The duration of this sleep is variable, from 15 minutes to 5 or 6 hours.

The health of our children – our most precious asset and our future – is at stake. This generation of children may be the first one who lives shorter, sicker lives than their parents. The rates of autism, ADHD, asthma, food allergies, obesity and diabetes continue to rise at an unprecedented pace. The conventional medicine solution so far has been a system that treats symptoms and that incentivizes more care at higher cost. The one disease-one prescription solution is expensive, ineffective and increasingly unsafe. Our children are sicker than before. Changing the current health care system is imperative in order to preserve the health of future generations. To meet the complex health challenges we face, we need a new approach: Whole Child Pediatrics.

I started looking at more treatment options and I came to the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. From there, I gained a newfound respect for nutrition, especially in children, and what a huge difference it makes.
I learned about other treatments that are considered alternative or holistic. If they have a lot of science behind them and if they have been studied the way we study prescription medication, we can safely incorporate it into traditional medicine. This is the basis of integrative medicine – bringing into western medicine these other treatments that may have been used for hundreds of years but aren’t studied. Now we have more scientific information, we know they are safe and effective. Integrative medicine is using different tools to heal children.
I still prescribe medication when needed, but I worked a lot with changing the lifestyle through nutrition, supplements, herbs, or I refer patients to chiropractic care and acupuncture.
