In Part 1 of Putting Heart into Your Child’s Education, we learned that our heart’s rhythms are key to getting “in-sync” physically, mentally, and emotionally and that this “in-sync” state of entrainment is optimal for learning and performing at our best.
We can gain insight into this entrainment state by physically measuring our heart rate variability (HRV) which is defined as a measurement of beat-to-beat changes in the heart rate.
Our heart is communicating with our brain and our body on many levels: neurologically (via the nervous system), biochemically (via hormones and neurotransmitters), biophysically (via pressure waves) and, new evidence suggests, energetically (via electromagnetic fields). To researchers at the Institute of HeartMath, these communication pathways seemed to be reflected in precise variations in the timing between heartbeats (HRV), acting as an intelligent “language” by which the heart sends information to the rest of the body.
Further research demonstrated that HRV was notably responsive to thoughts and feelings. Positive thoughts and feelings show a smooth sine wave-like pattern; angry or stressful thoughts and feelings show a jagged, erratic wave pattern.
Learning how to achieve this entrainment state in which the heart and the brain are synchronized is a skill that can be developed. Tools and techniques that quickly shift us out of stressful states by focusing on love and appreciation, for example, allow us to get back to a state of harmony, where we function at our best.
